The true history of caramel is somewhat unclear. There have been hard and soft version of the now famous candy. Some people believe that the first caramel was created around 1000 AD by The Arabs. To them, it was known as "kurat al milh" which translates to "sweet ball of salt". "Kurat al milh" was hard and crunchy, unlike the caramel that is popular today.
Others believe that the treat originated in the United States of America when someone added fat and milk while boiling sugar and water. By the mid 1800's chewy caramel hit the peak of it's popularity all across the country.
